"Remanufacturing
– An American Perspective"
by
Robert T. Lund and William M. Hauser, Boston University
"Remanufacturing -- An American Perspective" was
presented at the International Conference on Responsive Manufacturing on January
11, 2010 in Ningbo, China. Organized by the University of Nottingham, which has
a branch university in Ningbo, the conference featured two main themes:
remanufacturing and sustainability of the built environment. Attendees were from
Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America.

ABSTRACT: Remanufacturing is the process
of restoring non-functioning, discarded, or traded-in products (cores) to
like-new performance. Over a period of thirty years, the authors have studied
remanufacturing and have issued reports on various aspects of the industry. This
paper will describe some of what we have learned during three decades of
research on the topic: industry structure and scope, patterns in inputs and
costs, forms of organization of remanufacturing enterprises, beneficial aspects
of remanufacturing, and implications for other countries.
Remanufacturing provides a number of important benefits: greater availability of
products and lower prices to customers, employment and industrial skills
training to workers, and conservation of material and energy resources to
society. Remanufacturers tend to enter remanufacturing, however, in the same
pursuit of profits that motivates other entrepreneurs.
"Remanufacturing: Operating Practices and Strategies" by
Robert Lund and William Hauser
This 113-page report examines practices and strategies
employed by remanufacturers in the United States. It draws on the authors'
decades of study of the industry and on their database of thousands of
remanufacturing firms. In addition to the discussion of practices and
strategies, the report also contains profiles of seven U.S. remanufactures of
substantially different scale and product focus, in markets with different
competitive dynamics.
