Remanufacturing An Aging Motor Control Center: A Case Study

In 1999-2001, the New Jersey International & Bulk Mail Center (NJI&BMC) in Jersey City, one of the largest United States Postal Service facilities, was concerned about its eight 33-year-old motor control centers (MCCs). Events forced a decision to pursue options for replacing or remanufacturing the 276 cells that provide power primarily to 58 heating, air conditioning, and ventilation air handling units (HVAC AHUs) for the 1.8-million-sq-ft facility.

The in-house maintenance project was completed in November 2004 without any plant shutdowns, injuries, or delays in mail processing operations or exceeding the allotted budget. The project improved safety and security for employees and facility equipment, extended overall life of the MCCs, enhanced skills of the craft crew and employees, and saved an estimated $1.8 million.  Click here for full article.

Lexmark Cartridge Remanufacturing/Exchange Program Upheld By Appeals Court; The Battle Continues Between OEMs And Third-Parties

Printer maker Lexmark International Inc. in August 2005 said an appellate court upheld its cartridge return program following a legal challenge by an industry association. The program, which offers discounts for new laser printer cartridges if customers return used ones to Lexmark, was challenged by the Arizona Cartridge Remanufacturers Association Inc. The association's members remanufacture laser print cartridges, then sell them at discounted prices. The case was heard by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

"This is a victory for customers and their right to choose to receive a discount in exchange for a simple agreement to return the empty cartridge to Lexmark for remanufacturing or recycling," said Lexmark vice president and general counsel Vincent J. Cole in a statement.

Caterpillar Is Busy Expanding its Global Remanufacturing Footprint

Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services (Cat Reman) will act as Land Rover’s preferred global remanufacturing provider following the signing of a memorandum of understanding. Under the agreement Cat Reman will supply Land Rover with key elements such as remanufactured product development and product supply. Land Rover previously worked with a number of remanufacturing sources, among them Wealdstone Engineering, which was acquired by Cat Reman in 2004. Steve Fisher, Cat Reman president, said: “This opportunity demonstrates our automotive customers’ confidence in our abilities. Remanufacturing benefits the environment because fewer components are scrapped and sent to landfill." Cat Reman had previously been handling Land Rover’s core management at its European Remanufacturing Centre in Shrewsbury, Salop.

Caterpillar said its China-based subsidiaries have teamed up with a Shanghai industrial park developer to expand the heavy machinery maker's presence in that country. The company said the subsidiaries have signed three non-binding memorandums of understanding with the developer, which is affiliated with the city government. The subsidiaries will partner with the Lingang Industrial Area to establish a regulatory system for trade, establish the area as the main remanufacturing center for Caterpillar machines, and set up a service center. "These initiatives are tangible examples of our plans for future growth across all lines of Caterpillar's business in China," Chief Executive Jim Owens said in a statement, adding that the company's board recently held its first meeting in the country.

Caterpillar and Eurenov, a remanufacturer of automotive and industrial engines, transmissions and components, have reached an agreement for the purchase of the France-based company by Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services (Cat Reman). Eurenov, whose clients include leading European automotive manufacturers, operates its primary facility in Chaumont, France, and another facility in Radom, Poland. "Eurenov is a strong strategic fit for our company," said Steve Fisher, general manager of Caterpillar Remanufacturing Services. "They're a cost effective, highly flexible operation that is focused squarely on the customer." "We are looking forward to our opportunities with Cat Reman. Its remanufacturing expertise and global reach will enhance our ability to meet customer needs," said Denis Tremeau, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Eurenov. The acquisition of Eurenov will allow Cat Reman greater access to the European automotive and industrial engine and transmission remanufacturing market with expansion into Eastern Europe. At the same time, Eurenov will benefit from access to Caterpillar's expertise in technology and logistics. The acquisition will occur through a two-phase process, with Caterpillar obtaining full ownership in 2007, subject to the completion of legal and regulatory requirements.

GOLD™ Remanufacturing/Overhaul Software Implemented At Naval Aviation Depot At Cherry Point, NC For Hamilton Sundstrand Helicopter APUs

MIRO Technologies’ GOLD™ software was implemented at the Naval Aviation Depot (NADEP) at Cherry Point, NC in support of a U.S. Navy Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract for the repair of CH-46 and CH-53 helicopter Auxiliary Powers Units (APUs). GOLD was selected by Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, San Diego, CA, and its third party logistics provider, AAR Defense Systems & Logistics in Wood Dale, IL.

“We are thrilled about the success of the implementation on this U.S. Navy APU PBL,” said Vince Monteparte, President of MIRO Technologies. In addition to its inventory management and repair tracking capabilities, GOLD has the ability to communicate seamlessly with DOD legacy supply systems via MILS, used by Navy aviation units and at NADEP Cherry Point. GOLD is a Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) product, representing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry best-practice processes. It allows a contractor to support an installed weapons system by acting as a Contractor Inventory Control Point (C-ICP). GOLD™ supports 15 of 18 U.S. Air Force Contractor Supported Weapons System (CSWS) today, as well as the Navy’s largest PBL contract, Boeing’s F/A-18 E/F FIRST program. A version of GOLD, the Work Recording Asset Management (WRAM) maintenance and asset management system, has been in service for over ten years supporting over 500 aircraft for the U.K. Ministry of Defence.
